A Grid Shell
This study takes the StructureCraft Bandshell as a structural reference, using its doubly curved timber gridshell and perimeter ring as a starting point for understanding how a lightweight lattice can span through geometry rather than mass.
The hyperbolic paraboloid is used here as a simplified mathematical surface through which the relationship between curvature, grid orientation and perimeter restraint can be tested. The grid is developed parametrically, allowing its density, rotation and member geometry to change while maintaining the overall saddle form.
Rather than reproducing the Bandshell directly, the reference is used to investigate its underlying structural logic: how a flexible grid becomes stiff through double curvature, how loads are transferred toward the perimeter, and how the edge condition contributes to the stability of the shell.
